What an annual inspection actually involves
Per NFPA 10, every commercial portable fire extinguisher in New York must be inspected, tested, and tagged once a year by a qualified, certified inspector. A real annual inspection is more than a quick glance and a sticker — it's a hands-on check of each unit's pressure, seals, hose, nameplate, mounting, and access path.
On every Y&M annual inspection, we verify:
- Pressure gauge reads in the green operable range
- Tamper seal & pull pin are intact and secure
- Hose, nozzle, and shell show no cracks, dents, corrosion, or chemical buildup
- Nameplate & instructions are legible and facing outward
- Weight matches the manufacturer's specification
- Mounting bracket / cabinet is secure and at the correct height
- Access & visibility — nothing blocking it, signage above where needed
- Internal maintenance dates — 6-year and 12-year service due dates verified
Is annual inspection legally required?
Yes. The New York State Fire Code adopts NFPA 10, which mandates that every commercial fire extinguisher receive a documented annual inspection by a qualified person. This applies to virtually every property type: restaurants, offices, retail, schools, multi-family residential, warehouses, auto shops, medical facilities, and houses of worship.
If you have employees, customers, or tenants — your extinguishers need to be tagged and current.
Who needs an annual inspection?
- Any business with a Certificate of Occupancy in Nassau County or Long Island
- Restaurants and commercial kitchens (Class K + ABC required)
- Multi-family residential buildings (common areas, mechanical rooms, laundry rooms)
- Offices, retail stores, and warehouses
- Schools, daycares, and houses of worship
- Auto shops, garages, and industrial facilities
- Construction sites and trailers
What you receive from Y&M
- A signed, dated certification tag wired to every inspected unit
- A written inspection report listing each extinguisher, location, type, size, and status
- A flag list for any units that need recharge, hydrostatic testing, or replacement
- Reminder service so you're contacted before next year's expiry
How long does an annual inspection take?
Most small commercial sites with 2–10 extinguishers are inspected and tagged in under an hour, with no disruption to your operations. Larger properties are scheduled around your shift hours so customers and staff aren't affected.
What does it cost?
Pricing is per-unit and depends on extinguisher size and type. We provide a free upfront quote — no inspection fee surprises, no automatic upsells. If a unit is fine, we tag it and move on. If it genuinely needs recharge or hydrostatic testing, we tell you exactly why and what the code requires.
