When does an extinguisher need to be recharged?

NFPA 10 requires recharge in several situations — and any one of them takes a unit out of compliance until it's serviced:

  • After any use — even a 2-second test discharge or accidental bump that drops the gauge
  • If the pressure gauge is out of the green zone — too low or too high
  • After a 6-year internal maintenance — required for stored-pressure dry chemical units
  • After hydrostatic testing — once the cylinder passes pressure test, it's recharged before being placed back in service
  • After tamper-seal damage — broken seal means the integrity of the charge can't be verified
The myth of "still half full." Once a dry-chemical extinguisher discharges, the powder can pack and the propellant pressure drops below operational. A "half-empty" extinguisher is effectively useless — and an OSHA / fire-marshal violation if it stays mounted on the wall.

Extinguisher types we recharge

ABC dry chemical

The most common commercial extinguisher — handles ordinary combustibles (Class A: paper, wood), flammable liquids (Class B: oil, gasoline), and electrical fires (Class C). Used in offices, retail, warehouses, hallways, and most public spaces. Common sizes: 2.5 lb, 5 lb, 10 lb, 20 lb.

CO₂ (carbon dioxide)

Clean-agent extinguisher — leaves no residue, making it the right choice for server rooms, electrical panels, lab equipment, and computer-heavy areas. Recharged with food-grade CO₂ to factory weight. Common sizes: 5 lb, 10 lb, 15 lb, 20 lb.

Class K wet chemical

Mandatory in commercial kitchens for cooking-oil and grease fires (Class K = kitchen). Wet chemical agent saponifies hot oil and prevents re-flash. Required by NFPA 10 wherever there's a deep fryer or significant cooking surface — your code official will look for this on every restaurant inspection.

Water & water-mist

Class A only — used in some hospitality, healthcare, and historical-building applications where dry chemical residue is a problem.

How fast can you recharge mine?

For most ABC and CO₂ units, same-day turnaround is available. We can also leave a temporary loaner extinguisher in place so your coverage stays compliant while yours is being serviced. Call us — if the fire marshal is coming, we'll prioritize.

Recharge or replace? Recharge usually makes sense for most units under 12 years old. If the cylinder is past its 12-year hydro test, has visible corrosion, or needs a part that's no longer manufactured, replacement is often cheaper. We'll tell you straight — no automatic upsells.
